Kumiko is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique that has been passed down since the Asuka period and refined over many centuries.
It is a delicate craft in which pieces of wood are intricately fitted together without the use of a single nail.
At Tanihata, we carry on this tradition while creating our own original styles of Kumiko.

Connecting Toyama's Values to the Future.

“KUMIKOZA – Toyama Craft Lounge –” is a base for sharing the people, skills, materials, and design values nurtured in Toyama with people in Japan and around the world through kumiko making.

The kumiko that Tanihata has worked with is not merely traditional decoration. It is a practice that makes use of wood, refines skill, and connects culture to the future.
Using domestic wood without waste.
Producing no waste.
Not relying on plastic or fossil fuels.
Protecting forestry and primary industries and walking together with local communities and the global environment.

All of these are born from a sincere commitment to addressing social issues through kumiko making.

We also continue activities that value human sensitivity and quality of life, including workshops for children and initiatives that pass on Japan's housing culture and clothing culture to the next generation.

Toyama Craft Lounge aims to be a place to see beautiful things, experience values, and think about how to connect tradition to the future.
