TANIHATA’s Initiatives — Connecting Forests to the Future

At TANIHATA, we carry forward the traditional Japanese craft of kumiko woodworking while embracing a broader responsibility—
to protect the environment, preserve cultural heritage, and live in harmony with our local communities.
Through these efforts, we strive to create lasting value for future generations.
At Kumikoza, we present five key initiatives that reflect TANIHATA’s ongoing commitment.

01 Environmentally Responsible Craftsmanship

At TANIHATA, we are committed to minimizing waste throughout our manufacturing process. By reusing offcuts and continuously refining our cutting methods, we ensure that every piece of wood is used to its fullest potential, with minimal waste.
We also strive to reduce the use of plastics in our packaging and supplies wherever possible, replacing them with natural alternatives.
In addition, we regularly review our equipment and workflows to improve efficiency—reducing energy consumption and lessening our reliance on fossil fuels.

02 Connecting Forests and Industry to the Future

At TANIHATA, we choose to use domestic timber to support a sustainable cycle that strengthens Japanese forestry and local primary industries. Using wood does not mean depleting forests—it helps foster responsible management and regeneration.
Healthy forests sustain clean water, fertile soil, and the quality of everyday life.
Through our woodworking craft, we see it as our role to connect forests with society, helping to carry these natural resources forward into the future.

03 Preserving Japanese Culture and Craftsmanship

Kumiko is a highly refined woodworking technique unique to Japan, in which intricate wooden pieces are assembled without the use of nails.
Rooted in Japan’s architectural tradition—seen in shoji screens, transoms, and interior fittings—these delicate techniques and aesthetic sensibilities are gradually fading with the passage of time. Yet their value remains enduring.
By incorporating kumiko into contemporary architecture, commercial spaces, and interiors, we strive to carry forward Japan’s rich residential culture and woodworking traditions into the future.

04 Building the Future with Our Community and Children — Engaging the Five Senses

We believe that sharing the appeal of craftsmanship with the next generation is an essential part of our role.

Through factory tours and hands-on workshops, we create opportunities for children to experience the joy of making—touching the wood, breathing in its natural scent, and assembling each piece with their own hands.
The satisfaction of completion, the texture of the material, the sound of tools, and the fragrance of wood—these sensory experiences offer a richness that cannot be replicated in a digital environment. Through them, we hope to inspire future craftspeople, skilled technicians, and individuals who carry a lasting appreciation for wood.

05 Craftsmanship Inspired by a Wish for Peace

Kumiko patterns have long embodied wishes for human well-being—prosperity, good health, safety in the home, and longevity. The harmonious beauty of their geometric forms also reflects a deeper sense of balance—between people, and between humanity and nature.

To us, kumiko is more than decoration. It brings a sense of calm and quiet to a space, gently settling the mind. Through our craftsmanship, and through Kumikoza, we aspire to create environments where people feel at ease, where consideration for others can grow, and where a sense of peace and harmony can extend outward into the world. This is the wish at the heart of TANIHATA.
